Message from the Board of Education President

Dear Sag Harbor Community:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. It’s an exciting time to be a Whaler!

The District is embarking on considerable development with the former Stella Maris construction project. Our Administration will oversee the project, which includes renovating a building, relocating the preschool and administration offices, launching a new daycare center, and designing a proper middle school wing at Pierson. Like with every large-scale project, it’s important we exercise patience when unexpected items arise. Nevertheless, we expect continued excellence in programming, instruction, the arts and athletics.

While the District is undergoing this renewal, it’s my hope that so too will the Board. This year, the Board has the unique opportunity to reassess its governing role by addressing internal operating procedures. In order for a school board to work in a stable manner, established practices and procedures must be in place. As a team, we will draft and implement best practice protocol to guide us through the transition and years to come.

I'm pleased to report that in our ongoing efforts to increase transparency and strengthen communication we have adopted BoardDocs, a software program designed exclusively for local governments and school boards to improve efficiency and transparency. Furthermore, the District will launch a new mobile-based communication system with information presented in a user-friendly format.

As always, the security of our students and personnel remains our top priority. In order to fully address the issue, we must increase awareness of mental health and wellness. The District adopted the Seven Dimensions of Wellness and we support further implementation of the mental health prong of that initiative.

We all know Sag Harbor is a beautiful place to live and work, but what makes it magical is all of us working together. Thank you for your support and all you give to enhance the lives of our children and our school family.
